Jung and so many
others often say that suffering and defeat open the door to meaning and personal
transformation. Yet, he gives us only limited hints about how to bring about this transformation.
This lecture takes a difficult personal experience as an example and develops some Jungian
ideas and techniques for extracting meaning from our most challenging experiences. The discussion
also explores the role of community, love, and compassion in healing. We find that the discovery
of the archetype of meaning, the Self, relieves our suffering, and that repeated experiences
of the process strengthen us in difficult times.
Synchronicity and Soul-Making:
Discovering the Soul's Intent
Workshop
Without meaning,
even the most privileged life is empty. Soul-making or individuation usually seeks the meaning
of life through attention to inner processes. However, some of our most profound instances
of soul-making come in synchronicity experiences, which express the same meaning both inwardly
and outwardly, without one causing the other.
This experiential workshop will deepen our understanding and experience
of both synchronicity and soul-making. We will work toward a more powerful connection with
the intelligence at the core of our being and a deeper understanding of its expression in
our synchronicity experiences. We will clarify how synchronicity can offer us insights into
our soul's intent and how to cultivate receptivity to such experiences. Through case material,
music, poetry, imaginal work, writing exercises, and group discussion, participants will
experience both the intellectual and feeling dimensions of synchronicity and soul-making.
