Hosted by John Mutz, this 2004 film looks at the work of black cardiac pioneer Vivien Thomas and his complex 34-year partnership with white surgeon Alfred Blalock, the world famous “Blue Baby doctor” who pioneered modern heart surgery. In 1930, Blalock hired Thomas as a janitor at Vanderbilt University, but his dexterity and intellectual acumen landed him the role of research partner. Following a move to John Hopkins in 1943, they had to skirt a racist system that only allowed Blalock to receive the acclaim.
